1970, Stanley Street, Auckland was the birthplace of Ian Nielsen's blacksmithing workshop, a legacy continuing a family tradition spanning generations.
His high-quality work earned him a reputation, with his forged tools becoming sought-after in hardware stores nationwide. He crafted tons of crowbars and mooring chains for Auckland Harbour, and repaired and restored countless tools – a testament to a time when quality and longevity were paramount.
This success allowed the workshop to relocate to Church Street, Penrose, in 1988, likely with hopes that his son, Kim, would one day carry on the family trade.
Kim, captivated by his father's work, inevitably followed in his footsteps.
Joining the family business in 2000, he learned the trade from his father, mastering the skills of a true blacksmith.
Together, Ian and Kim built Ian Nielsen & Son Ltd. into a thriving business, producing high-quality tools and specialised components for various companies.
Now, carrying on the business after his father's passing, Kim works to uphold the family's legacy of craftsmanship.
He hopes that his father, his ancestors, and the generations of Nielsens before him would be proud of the work he continues to produce.
Today, in a world increasingly reliant on cheap mass-produced imports, Kim Nielsen stands as a guardian of traditional blacksmithing.
A legacy forged over generations, a commitment to craftsmanship that remains unmatched - his expertise ensures the creation of high-quality, durable products using time-tested techniques.
